State Summary 2017 — West Virginia
The Mobile Ag Ed Science Lab revised/updated the following lessons we currently offer to Pre-K through 5th grade students: Colorful Bean - Revised lesson procedures, updated soybean uses info, obtained newest booklet "Max the Sprout" as classroom extension; Clean Sweep - Updated nutritional labels, revised lesson materials; Snack Attack - Updated nutritional labels, food items, lesson procedure sheets; Glue from Milk - Revised lesson materials; Strawberry DNA - Revised lesson procedure sheet; Groundhogs Garden - Revised student lesson sheet; Take Me Out to the Cornfield - Revised student lesson sheet; Tops and Bottoms - Revised student lesson sheet.
Major Program Accomplishments or Outputs
We held a two day Summer Agriculture Institute in 2017 with 35 teachers attending. The Mobile lab visited 36 schools throughout the year. Our magazine reaches 25,000 and subscribers with news and information about Ag/Ag issues. Regular info emails go out to 6,000 recipients.
Major Program Impacts or Outcomes
92% of teachers in serviced in 2017 said that they planned to use at least one of the activities they learned at the Summer Ag Institute.
100% of teachers in serviced would recommend our program to their friends and other teachers.
85% of schools ask for the Mobile Ag Ed Science Lab to revisit their schools in the future.
At least 75% of the students add to or gain knowledge of Agriculture after their visit in the Mobile Ag Ed Science Lab.
WVFB holds a Summer Ag Institute for educators every June and has for 15 plus years.
For Mary Beth Bennett - I have my AA, BS, MS and Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State university. I spent 2 years in Brazil with the Peace Corps between my AA and BS and 4 years in Africa between my BS and MS. I have been a County Agricultural Agent for the last 24 years and developed the West Virginia Ag in the Classroom Program by holding a Summer Agriculture Institute each year to train teachers.
For Michelle Bailey – My AA and BS is from Fairmont State University. I have spent the past 18 years teaching in an Early Childhood classroom. I joined the West Virginia Farm Bureau staff in 2015 as coordinator for the Mobile Ag Ed Science Lab.
